Week-night nosh

Hi Jas! …what’s cooking? … is that Atlantic salmon for me?

Ok, so we are OUT of kitty crunchies? … is that what you’re telling me??

Liz working her stir-fry magic … can there ever be enough garlic and chili?

Shopping for pumpkin and ginger soup items and Liz gets distracted by the banana sign.

Fabulous stir-fry and red wine–thanks Liz!

Liz adds just a little more coriander–surprise, surprise!

Almina Docklands

This is not too far from where I work so we have been here several times.

Ok, this labne in the middle is just amazing.

In the gorgeous warm weather we are having, it was lovely to sit outside in the Docklands and gaze at lights across the water.

Unlicensed so we had a drink at The Wool Shed shed prior – that’s Vicki cradling a glass of bubbles –  Lucky me I had my very own personal photographer or this post may not have happened!

The food is very well priced and we ordered WAY too much. The falafel and also the cheese & spinach pastries were great.

Almina crew put all leftovers in takeaway containers, so I was still eating falafel two days later.

Waaaay too much.

Another added bonus is our Lebanese friend we work with, who told stories of Lebanon, her parents and the trips (or lack of) back home; makes me realise how good we have it and how spoiled we are.

Alright, just add the labne to these two and I am set. Ok, maybe the fattoush as well.

The verdict

Food: 8/10, Service: 7/10, Value: 8/10

Great reds of April & May

Telegraph Station McLaren Vale Shiraz 2011

Every now and then you stumble across a magnificent red that is well under $20.00. I picked this up from a clearance bin and it was a corker. After a week of following up websites that indicate they have this wine, I have now confirmed that the 2011 is no more.

If you do spot it anywhere buy every bottle … I was told by one winestore that the 2012 promised to be just as stunning but after securing a ‘test’ bottle, it did not dazzle like 2011.

Jenner & Webb Larkey’s Corner Clare Valley Shiraz 2010

Another end of bin teaser! Why did I find it so late–ugh! Again, if you spot it, grab all bottles in sight.

Tomich Grace And Glory McLaren Vale Shiraz 2012

So sorry to be a tease in those two above, finally here is one that you can still buy! Chocolate, cinnamon, blackberry: fabulous.

The label suggests beef, roasts and ribs but I found it to be sensational with a homemade pizza.

Japanese introduction to Autumn

In love again with Japanese food! With my recent Italian and Vietnamese obsession, Japanese food had been on the back burner. Over the other side of town for the day and by 6.00 pm the autumnal evening had me planning a pizza and red wine. I took a chance on finding a friend available last minute.

Joan is a Saint

Due for a girls catch-up I head to Pope Joan in East Brunswick to meet with two friends. We had talked about it for so long and now we are here! The place was buzzing and food was good.

I had read some complaints (reviews, blogs) about serving-sizes; agreed the meals weren’t trucker-size but I guess it depends on what you are after: quality or quantity? Continue reading
